Rwenzori Margherita peak hiking suspended by Uwa

Rweanzori Summit - Margherita Peak

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has taken the precautionary measure of indefinitely suspending hiking to the Margherita Peak, the highest point on Rwenzori, due to a deep crack on the ice. The decision comes after a comprehensive assessment conducted by the team in response to reports of a crevasse formation in the Margherita glacier.

According to the National Geographic Channel, crevasses are deep, wedge-shaped openings in moving masses of ice known as glaciers. They typically form in the top 50 meters (160 feet) of a glacier, where the ice is brittle, due to various factors such as differential speeds in glacier movement.

“To make hiking safer, we are exploring the option of installing a permanent ladder at a strategic location on the right side of the Margherita glacier. This alternative route will provide a safer passage for hikers to Margherita Peak,” a statement issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority says.

Regarding the duration of the suspension, UWA did not provide a specific timeframe. However, the authority prioritizes the safety and well-being of clients and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

In the interim, visitors are encouraged to explore other picturesque peaks within Rwenzori Mountains National Park, such as Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Cheptegei Peak on the Stanley Range. These routes offer breathtaking views and unique experiences amidst the stunning landscape of the park.

UWA emphasizes its commitment to ensuring the safety of all visitors and will provide updates on the status of hiking activities to Margherita Peak as developments unfold.

Margherita Peak stands at a majestic height of 5109m on Mount Stanley in the Rwenzori mountains, ranking as the third-highest peak in Africa. It was first climbed in 1906 and named after Queen Margherita of Italy. The peak is part of the high-altitude Rwenzori loop, offering a challenging yet rewarding hike amidst the stunning scenery of the park.
